The crime rate in Florida is down 4.3% to 5.164 per 100 residents. Hillsborough County’s rate is down 2.8 percent to 7.02 per 100 people. Tampa’s is down 5.3% to 10.74 per 100 residents. Hillsborough’s rate is the second highest county in Florida behind Miami-Dade. Why are the numbers down? Perhaps because we’re arresting more criminals (6.8% more), and keeping them in jail longer (related prison population rise), as the cost per inmate goes down.
