In 1528, Spanish explorer Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca may have landed at Clearwater Beach. As part of the crew, a man named Theodoros became the first known Greek in America after Columbus. A statue at Pier 60 park on the beach commemorates the Greek man and the event. It does not say if he visited Tarpon Springs.
