At the old fairgrounds near University of Tampa, Plant Field was the site for spring training. 86 years ago today, Babe Ruth hit his longest home run ever. During a spring training game vs. the New York Giants, Ruth (then with the Boston Red Sox) hit one hard enough to land 587 feet from home plate. Or possibly 579 feet (find “Tampa”). Today’s Tribune said 612 feet, but I can find no online corroboration. At any rate, there are doubts about all old claims of long-hit balls, and others profess Ruth’s longest was in Pennsylvania (over 600 ft.). Also remember that Ruth’s accomplishments came before MLB denounced steroid use, so we don’t know if he was cheating.
