Leaving 75 degree temps in Tampa, Wifey and I flew into Newark on Friday afternoon. Stepping out of the airport (EWR in Jersey speak) into an overcast day, complete with bitter cold, we found a fast driving, limited English speaking cab driver to take us on a roller coaster ride to our hotel in Rutherford, just outside of Lyndhurst for $35 plus tolls. Wifey kept her eyes closed the whole way.
To save money, it seems the Renaissance Meadowlands hires one guy to register guests, concierge, and sell soda/coffee/newspapers. We checked into the Ren with the helpful gentleman, Luis (a Jackie Chan look alike) and went upstairs to unpack. Tucked in between highways, the hotel at the corner of Polito & Rutherford is within walking distance to almost nothing (at least in that cold weather), but has a great view of a cemetery up the hill.
With a couple hours to kill before the concert, we were only a little hungry. The Ren houses a CK’s Steakhouse, and the only businesses nearby were two other hotels. Since we have eaten at CK’s in Tampa, we went over to the Quality Inn’s Harold’s New York Deli Restaurant, home to the world’s largest pickle bar. Not wanting to spend $25.00 for a sandwich, we ordered a couple beers instead. We found out later the sandwiches were two feet high. Anyway, we ended up eating a great small dinner at the third hotel, the Courtyard Café.
coming soon: an Eagles Concert at the Meadowlands
