take it easy indeed
In the hallway of our 5th floor room, we ran into a couple of guys from South Jersey loading a big cooler into their room. We explained that we were from Florida, and that Wifey won the concert trip. It turns out they were going to the show, and planned on calling a cab. Eventually, there were about 15 other concertgoers staying at the same hotel, all wanting a ride to the Meadowlands. Luis arranged for one of Josie’s Taxis to pick up Wifey and I. Of course, a foursome grabbed the first taxi, and the driver promised to come back for us. Meanwhile, Luis called Josie again to get more cabs, so the dispatcher decided to bring his SUV in to help with the rush. Assuming the SUV ride was part of the contest winnings, the two guys from 517 jumped in the cab with us. Once explained, the two offered to pay for the ride there, and we were to pay for the ride back. I quickly agreed, and joked we wouldn’t see ‘em again anyway.
We got to the Continental Airlines Arena, and enjoyed a quick cigarette before getting in line for our pat-down. Once it was determined we had no weapons, dope or flasks, we found our seats in the upper level. Wifey got settled in, and I went to purchase some $6.75 beers. The arena looks much the same as any other arena in the country, although this one has plenty of banners hanging from the rafters, including one for Bruce (15 consecutive sellouts). There’s no smoking area, and other than one intermission, if you went outside, you would not be allowed back in.
With no fanfare, the lights went out, and the band began to play. Henley, Frey, and Walsh each sang from their solo catalogs as well as the many Eagle hits. Except when Walsh was singing lead, every song sounded exactly like the cuts from their albums. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Eagles (there are millions), but they certainly showed off their musical talents during the languid performance. They played an hour, took a 20 minute break, and got back on it for another hour and a half. I don’t really see why they needed a break, unless they went outside to grab a smoke. The music was flawless, but it wasn’t what I would call an unabashed rock ‘n’ roll show.
Not seeing our new friends afterward, we grabbed the first available cab back to the hotel and headed straight for the bar. During one of our trips outside, the Jersey guys showed up, so I bought them a round to cover cab fare. Last call was near midnight (!!???), so we ordered a few more, checked in with you great people, and finished drinking upstairs.
