just lemme be…. your teddy bear
On June 3, 1898 (107 years ago), the Rough Riders came into Tampa in preparations for the Spanish-American War. The second in command was Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt, later the President of the United States and inspiring a stuffed animal to be forever known as a “Teddy Bear.”
One of the more famous visitors to Tampa, Roosevelt really didn’t do much while he was here. No matter, though. A couple landmarks have been named because of his short stay including Roosevelt Elementary School and Roosevelt Blvd. in Clearwater. And of course, there’s also a local Krewe named the Rough Riders.
