In addition celebrating the country’s independence, July 4th marks the beginning of Picnic Island. One of Tampa’s oldest parks, Picnic Island opened on July 4, 1888. According to the Civic Association of Port Tampa City, the area was opened as a beach amusement resort by Col. S.G. Harvey. It originally was an island, but was later made a part of the mainland.
