You know, it’s really this freakin’ simple.
And local TV station Channel 10 doesn’t help. Many of their stories begin with the impossible dateline.

I’ve lived here for 15 years and I still don’t understand this chip on everyone’s shoulders. Tampa hates to be called Tampa Bay because of the word Bay, St Pete and Clearwater hate to be called Tampa Bay because of the word Tampa. What difference does it make? This is a region made up of many cities. even though Tampa is the largest it is still a small part of the overall region. So the region is referred to as Tampa Bay. GET OVER IT!
as for the pic on the link “this freakin simple” that’s not Tampa Bay that’s Hillsborough Bay!

It’s a pet peeve of mine also. I try very hard to say “Tampa Bay Area” or “Bay Area” when I’m not using “Tampa” to distinguish between the two. The Channel 10 article you linked to contains several typographical errors. They’ve written “it’s employee’s” instead of “its employees” — basic high school grammar. So no wonder they can’t get the dateline correct!

I understand referring to the area as Tampa Bay. And I’m proud to live in the Tampa Bay area. But you will never, ever hear me say or see me write “Tampa Bay, FL” Tampa Bay is not a city.

It very likely has to do with our sports teams. Most peoples’ only exposure to the area is via football, baseball, or hockey when they see the Bucs, Rays, or Bolts play against their team. So they naturally think that the town, like the teams, is named Tampa Bay.

Then there’s the whole confusion over Tampa Bay and Hillsborough Bay.

Oh no, battle of The Bays. See that point over there, newbies? You missed it. Those of us who have lived in Tampa all our lives know how hard it is for newbies to explain where St. Pete is, or Clearwater, or “New” Tampa, for that matter. So they give their friends and relatives a reference point, “I’m living in Tampa Bay.”
Enjoy the swim.
