blogging in print

Tribune writer Jeff Houck writes in the first person while wondering about Eddie, a New Orleans waiter. You don’t see many stories like that in the newspaper. Even today, news stories write about how “a reporter” did this or that, trying to remain out of the story. But the Tribune has been publishing more and more examples where the writer actually seems to be a part of the scene. Which makes sense to me, since they are there. Of course, Jeff knows how to write like a blogger, he’s a professional.

There’s some rumbling that the appearance of more first-person narrative reporting like this is the result of blogs’ influence; readers apparently prefer this to the played-out objective approach.

Rubbish, of course. Katrina is a special case; in this instance, the situation calls for some of this type of accounting, as a supplement to traditional reporting.

So the Trib is trying to have journalist write in the New Journalism-style.

A St Pete Times reporter was shot while covering Katrina. In case your interested.
