The founder of Ybor City, Vicente Martinez-Ybor was born on September 7, 1818, in Valencia, Spain. In 1886 he found a spot to build a new cigar factory just northeast of Tampa. By March 26 of 1888, Ybor began producing cigars. The rest is history. The man, instrumental in Tampa’s development, died in December 1896.
