in other news, beer is good

HCBOCC Chair Jim Norman was on the radio this morning addressing issues that the Hillsborough County Commissioners is considering today.

First Norman claimed that the Hillsborough County School Board was once on track to eliminate portables, but then the dastardly class-size amendment came into effect. The Community Investment Tax is supposed to pay for schools, he said, not impact fees. He argued that Hillsborough is one of only 20 counties to even have a schools impact fee. Jack Harris did not question him further.

Next Norman indicated once again that the Community Investment Tax should be used to build Norman’s World. Wait… I thought that money should be used to buy new schools. Jack Harris did not question him further.

Yeah I heard that interview too. Glad someone else who heard him was apalled. In my case, I heard it as I sat stuck in Hillsborough County traffic.

The scary part? Someone somewhere in the audience heard him and slapped their knee saying “Hot diggety dang, that man is doing a heck of a job!”.

When that subject gets brought up, I immediately think of portable classrooms. “Florida schools have 20,700 portable classrooms on their campuses this year, according to state Department of Education figures. Despite efforts to try to eliminate the temporary buildings, that number has risen from 15,882 just five years ago.” [...]

  4. [...] Oh well, F*ck ‘em. There’s mass transit envy, scary gay people to suppress, self-aggrandizing sports edifices, skanky swimsuit servers to eliminate, transit systems to blow up, hurricanes to ignore, school districts to micromanage, perks to even out, dangerous flesh peddlers to harass, developments to grease through, and back-door pay raises to deal with. Besides, dead people don’t vote. [...]

  5. [...] Developer-friendly Commissioners look for any excuse not to do it.  But most people think the impact fee needs to be raised.  Even the Tampa Bay Builders association agrees it should be $2,000.  But the TBBA also wants to include a sales tax hike and property tax increase. [...]
