Absolutely not. A blog sponsored by a news outlet isn’t much of a blog. You’re supposed to be able to say anything–that’s the point. Do you think newsies can do that with corporate space? Just a way for the Trib to try and hook up to hip. Not working.
Be nice, Tommy! You know it’s a compliment! I vaguely remember a post where you wrote something like, “and maybe the Trib will catch on to blogs at some point, too.” See what influence you have on the mass media? You devil, you.
Despite his “shameless plug,” I’ve enjoyed reading Chase . . . I’ve also read Walt Belcher’s alleged “TV Blog,” but it’s really just “TV Briefs,” with a link that allows you to e-mail Walt, which, of course, means it’s not a “blog.” Corporate paranoia inherently prevents (too much) creativity -– on the other hand, corp.s pay the tab, so, as they say, “ya getz what yez payz for.” I like Walt, and appreciate his writing talent, but money drives the media process, despite all the talk about “Freedom of the Press.” Otherwise, how do you explain lay-offs of field reporters and cut-backs at bureaus (over the years) by Media GIANTS, while at the same time perky “faces’ like Katy Couric get multiple-million dollar contracts. Eye-candy beats substance too many times . . .
The sptimes.com blogs are really pretty good — they update them often and it’s not the same crap they put in the paper. They’ve got a couple dozen of them, it seems. Stick with the better ones and you’ll see some great humor — the TV blog by Chase is fantastic, the 80s blog from two TBT writers is freakin’ hilarious! There’s no way those two blogs can be called corporate.

The TBT seems to have attached the word blog to them to try to keep up with the times, so to speak. I have seen a few personal blogs and I’m disappointed. When did it become acceptable to run around with a camera and display photos/post hurtful commentary of people who live and work in this area? It makes me angry and resentful when I then see their byline.
Please do me the honor of saying hello to The Stew, a close cousin of Side Salad. This is an officially sanctioned, licensed and authorized food weblog I’m doing for The Tampa Tribune. Be kind. The Stew is only a few days old. You’ll get the same go…
