whats in a name

Regular readers may have noticed that I quit the Thursday evening question. That’s because the questions were getting more and more lame. The concept is decent, so the idea is not completely dead, it will just be unscheduled. Don’t get me wrong, the questions will still be lame, I just won’t feel pressured into making some crap up every single week.

Having said that, the new leader of the Devil Rays will consider changing the name of the pro baseball team over in St. Pete. You may recall we already came up with suggestions for a faux basketball team. Well, within that conversation, Boltsmag John reported that the Devil Rays would search for a new name. The Tribune suggests a renaming too, so I’ll give you all another run at it.

Assuming we don’t like the Tampa Bay St. Petersburgers, do you have any new suggestions to name St. Pete MLB team?

Devil Rays is a great name, I just don’t understand the need to change it. But if keeping it the same isn’t an option then I would like something like the Barracudas.

SunRays — You heard it here first . . . Mark your calendar. Plus, works perfect with the SunCoast.

I have a feeling they’re just going to eliminate the “devil” part.

Remember that “devil” without the “d” is “evil” — and many peope equate “evil” with “bad” . . . which is how we play, sometimes. I’m not suggesting that “devil” is bad karma, but I did notice that the ANGELS are in the playoffs. Angels “in”; Devil(Rays) “out.” Is there a pattern here? Hmmmmmmmmm, Angel-Rays? “Flap-Flap; Buzz-Buzz.” Naaaaaah, I’m still goin’ with SunRays — whuuuuuu, bright, shiny …

“Devil Rays” suck… The fish has no connection to the area (it’s rarely found in the Gulf of Mexico) and the animal is characterized as “a bottom feeder”. Do you REALLY think the name is a great moniker for a sports franchise?

For those who have said just get rid of “Devil” in the an,e — been there, tried that. The Rays have dropped Devil in all their stationary, off their uniforms, have tried to get the media to stop calling them the Devil Rays, etc… It’s just not happening if you keep the team called Rays in any way, shape or form. The fans – guys like me – are goign to keep calling them the D-Rays in conversation, the media will keep doing it and whatever. Someone may make the argument that the same might happen if the Tampa Bay franchise changes their name to something else, but if they do they will likely get rid of the colors, logo, and uniforms. For all inherit purposes, there will be only one reminder fo the Devil Rays franchise and that is Tropicana Field.

My vote was for the Tampa Bay Thunder for a baseball team on the other post (though the name was chosen for the Basketball team) and I am sticking to it. There is little chancee that we get basketball so a Bball team can find another moniker if it ever does come to town. Tampa Bay Thunder was the name I wanted for an Expansion franchise over the years and wwas sad to see a creative-but-dumb decision to name the team Devil Rays. The name “Devil Rays” is too long (so is “White Caps” for that matter – for some clowns in the media that think that’s what the team should be renamed) and very minor-league… You’d expect a class-A Ballclub to be playing under that name – not a major league baseball team.
