Grey(t)hounds
Saturday at the Ybor Fresh Market where I was signing books along with some other local authors, the people from Bay Area Greyhound Adpoptions were there with a few dogs. I, of course, wanted to take all of them home where I currently have a greyhound of the miniature variety. But I digress.
Hubby and I have a difference of opinion about Greyhound racing. I confess that in my unenlightened past, I liked to go to dog races. I even won a trifecta at a London track one time. But now I’m anti-dog racing because of the surplus of animals that results when they outlive their usefulness. Obviously, they don’t all find loving homes. Hubby on the other hand argues that the only reason they were born was to race. So what if many get euthenized? They otherwise would never have been born. What do you think?
Whatever you think about racing, you should know that these dogs are quiet, loving pets that don’t require much exercise. Check out the Adoption website and consider adding a greyhound to your family.

My ex girlfriend rescued a Greyhound that, she was convinced, would have ended up dead even in a greyhound shelter. The animal was timid - his racing record reflected that - and frightened in his cage with other greyhounds.
She took him in, basically weened him into normal day-to-day life of a dog, and then gave him to a new home.
That’s one thing they do not explain to people about greyhounds during and after their careers - they don’t know the basic things in life that any dog at home knows. They sleep on concrete and if they are lucky - they get newspaper to play with (as it lines their cages).
I have a whippet myself but I would surely think to bring a greyhound into my home if I wouldn’t run into any problems.

I have adopted two greyhounds plus foster greyhounds for a local rescue group. I cannot understand how anyone can put them to sleep just because they have outlived their usefulness as racers. These are the kindest and most gentle dogs you could ever own. We will keep trying to find homes for as many as we can and spread the good word about this breed!!!
