At least the investigators are willing to admit it was probably a case of the woman hitting the accelerator instead of the brake and then panicking. I remember the days of SAIs–Sudden Acceleration Incidents–which were said to be a result of a design flaw (particularly in Audi 5000s) but were really just an attempt to cover for what happens when well-fed voters “inadvertently select the wrong pedal and continue to do so unwittingly,” to quote a 1989 federal DOT press release on the subject.
Of course, as long as the state lets us renew our licenses through the mail instead of requiring honest tests every few years, I expect we’ll continue to see these sorts of things as our more experienced citizens reach the point where they are too wizened to drive but not yet wise enough to admit it.
