tip of the sombrero
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers played the last game in the old Tampa Stadium on December 28, 1997 (today’s printed Tribune says it was 1987, but I was there - it was ‘97).
They whooped up on the Lions 20-10 in their first playoff appearance in 15 years. And the crowd was rocking. After fifteen years of not making the playoffs, that last game ever at “Houlihan’s Stadium” was a bunch of fun.
A somewhat related note: The Bucs also won the last football game ever played in old Veterans Stadium, beating the Eagles 27-10 on January 19, 2003.

I remember that game in the old sombrero because I was going thorugh some physical hardships at the time…. John Madden and Pat Summerall were complaining about pre-mature celebration that was going on in the closing seconds of the game — fireworks going off prematurely and what not…

My favorite story about the sombrero was after the last game. The police were using it to practice their hostage rescue techniques. So the set up to blast open a door to the press box to rescue. The objective is to blast the door OPEN and then they can charge in. Thing was they hadn’t blasted many a’door I guess. The first charge had no effect, the second blew up the door and would have killed anybody in the room. I hope they have gotten better!

Tommy, I was under the impression that I did have an RSS feed (the “Blog This” button at the top). But I’m an idiot when it comes to technology and computers, so if I’m wrong let me know it.
