Oh look: another holiday, as in happy holidays.
Most Bay area denizens know January 6 for the festivities in Tarpon Springs to celebrate Epiphany. This year’s a big one: the first cross-diving was 100 years ago.
But don’t forget your Hispanic neighbors – a lot of them (including yours truly) will be celebrating Three Kings Day today (El Dia de los Reyes for our Spanish-speaking readers).
Particularly after we moved to the States from Puerto Rico (I was a mere 6 years old) my parents always made an effort to make the 6th a bigger event than Christmas, in the hope that my brother and I wouldn’t lose the tradition (the above link says the hay for the camels bit is Mexican – I’m not sure who started it, but we did it too). I’m happy to say I’ve at least been a good son in regards to this; I’ve even helped the tradition catch on with my non-Hispanic wife and a few friends.
More gift-giving and holiday food – how could anyone pass that up?
