The rumors of Home Depot purchase of a local supply house are true. You did not hear that here first.

A couple weeks ago, we were told that the big box do-it-yourself chain was going to acquire Cox Lumber. Now I’m not so sure.

This week, Home Depot announced plans to buy Orlando-based Hughes Supplies for 3.2b. That sale had also been rumored for a while. An industry analyst, Michael Cox, was quoted in stories of that rumor back in November.

So now I’m wondering if this Piper Jaffray Analyst Michael Cox/Home Depot/Hughes Supply connection is the basis of the Cox Lumber rumors.

Hmmm.
