Fortune magazine says Publix is ranked as the 56th best place to work in the country. This makes the 9th consecutive year the Lakeland-based grocery store has made Fortune’s list of 100. They usually rank high in customer satisfaction as well.

What Fortune found, the Publix website and current job openings at Publix.

Notice anything unusual? Excellent organization, excellent regard for its employees and employee relations; and excellent customer service, that while pricier, is affordable. How completely unlike the third-world consumer mentality places like Wal-Mart want to make the norm. Customers (or employees) are not cattle and I think the future is in retail organizations that wake up to that fact.

I worked for Publix for five years. While I can’t agree with every single one of their management practices (labor hours for upper store management is ridiculous), they take care of their employees, they are extremely customer oriented, and they make some of the best subs in town. I won’t shop anywhere else, and I suspect most of their customers feel the same way.

Add to that one more factor: Unlike every other major grocery chain in Florida, Publix does NOT require customers to use a “loyalty card” to obtain advertised discounts.

Albertson’s, Winn-Dixie and Food Lion all use customer-tracking systems that feed into a central database operated by Catalina Marketing of St. Petersburg (Catalina is nationwide, they just happen to be headquartered in the Bay area.) Catalina admits that one of its missions is “data mining” to predict and influence consumer behavior. Call me paranoid, but I don’t really appreciate grocery stores selling info like this. Publix doesn’t, its management says it never will, and I surely appreciate that.
