January 29, 1941 – Approval is given for the immediate construction of Henderson Field, a new airfield near Temple Terrace, as part of the national defense buildup.

But what happened to Henderson Field? I didn’t think there still was such a thing.

If you want to read a chronnology of Henderson Field, and see a picture of how it looked in 2003 with portions of USF and the Busch Brewery and Busch gardens built on or near it take a look at http://www.airfields-freeman.com/FL/Airfields_FL_TampaN.htm You’ll have to scroll down to the bottom of the page but there is some interesting info about it as a site for teen drag racing in the 50s. I won’t make any admission about why I visit sites about defunct airfields or deadmalls.com which also has some interesting Tampa history.

Thanks! I am going to waste so much time at work on that site tomorrow. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve flown right over that industrial park and never even noticed the big X in the middle of it.
