lisbon avenue renamed
Someone has made use of the Ask a Tampan feature here in the Sticks. I thought it would be a bit more popular than it has - perhaps I need to change the name…
Anyway, reader Tim asked:
In what year was the current MacDill Avenue name changed to MacDill? Thanks!
Tim, I passed this question over to my friends at the Tampa Bay History Center. Unfortunately, they have the city directories are unavailable right now, so we don’t have an exact date (yet). But we do have a little bit of information. The name of the street was definitely Lisbon Avenue, and was changed to MacDill probably between 1939 and 1941.
The TBHC expects to access their books next week, and we will be able to narrow down the exact date at that time.
If you have any question about Tampa - any question at all - I encourage you to Ask a Tampan. We’ll give you the right answer - no strings attached.

My guess it was probably 1941. That’s when they named Dale Mabry after an army aviator because it was built to connect MacDill with an airfield located at what is now TIA. (Mabry was a WWI army aviator from Tallahassee who died in a dirigible crash in Norfolk, VA)

I think Jim Beeler from The Planning Commission knows…I remember hearing him talk about this during a meeting once, not ever so long ago. (Yes, I watch Planning Commission meetings on public access, what can I say? Soy una perdadora.)
