Cowhead cometh

Imagine my delight when I turned onto Gandy the other day, rode past Clear Channel and saw the glorious message on the marquee declaring Cowhead’s return to morning drive on 98Rock.  No, I hadn’t tuned in over the past month or so because, frankly, I just gave up on Tampa radio for a while.

It’s been a tumultuous two years for the folks at WXTB-FM since they had to bounce the self-proclaimed superstar off the air (insiders say he had it coming). They tried one false starter after another and nothing seemed to work. Things got so bad I was tuning into WUSF on the way to work, until it started affecting my libido and not in a good way.

Maybe it was a stroke of luck that, when Infinity lost patience last summer with its Outlaw format and decided to go Espanol, Cowhead became a free agent again. Thankfully somebody at 98Rock was paying attention and remembered this guy was the real reason Bubba’s show was a success.  Especially when Bubba was far more interested in “goin’ national” than talking to his loyal local listeners. (How’s that working out for you, Todd? I’m still looking for those Sirius billboards and bumper stickers around town.)

If you haven’t heard Cowhead lately, push the preset (97.9FM) on your car radio the night before, turning up the volume just loud enough that you don’t spill coffee all over the dashboard. Better yet, set your clock radio and don’t even bother hitting snooze. Thank you, Cowhead, for giving us a reason to wake up again!

Yeah I gave up on Tampa Radio as well. About the only station worth a damn is 88.5. I listen to Sirius as well, and I have only tuned into Bubba once. It is good for nostalgia purposes but I am not a giggling teenage boy anymore, I don’t care if you have strippers in the studio, I can’t see them…

Say what you want about Bubba, or Todd, or whatever, but he’s been laughing all the way to the bank. Since he was fired, he’s still been collecting close to $1m (I’m pretty sure that’s the right figure) from having a well-made contract that’s made sure he gets paid regardless. Add that to his new deal and the guy is filthy, stupid, stinking rich.

I’m not sticking up for the guy one bit, I just wouldn’t get cocky trying to rub anything in his face. He smells of nothing but roses.

For his detractors, that’s gotta burn, burn burn.

He lost me at the whole pig-slaughter. I racked everything else up to shock-jock antics - which even “insiders” should tell you they let go and in fact encouraged for a very long time. It wasn’t until the FCC really got super hands-on about it that they decided to do anything other than just pay the fines as a cost of doing business in having the #1 rated am drive show in the market.

Hate having to respond to my own posts, but why do certain people think crap gets justified when it’s wrapped in dollar bills? Does that then mean that people who go out of their way to do good but don’t profit from it are wasting their time?
As for that whole “burn” thing, yeah I felt it but it was from some Mexican food I ate the night before.

I have to agree about Cowhead. At first I thought it was going to be an attempt to shock people into listening to 98 Rock again in the morning. After listening for about a month I am pleasantly surprised. There are topical guests and great anecdotes ( and I don’t mean about strippers, or baby mommas, or race cars).
    Good luck to Cow.

  5. barry radio Says:

Guys, a complaint has been made about the show to the FCC… in all probability, cowhead will loose his job.

  6. Matt Says:

Gee “barry” how did you get your info so soon?

  7. Mike Says:

I sure hope they bring back The Cowhead show. radio in Tampa sucks again without it. Does anyone know what
happend. was it the F bomb the stripper dropped. or was it the comments about the abortion issue. I hope its not because of the silly game show with the Ex Baseball players wife. In any case it is or was a vey entertaining show

    Does anyone know what happened??

It probably isn’t being talked about b/c of their contract!! I wonder if they got paid out??

I am looking for any info!!

SIRIUS has Howard and Bubba the love sponge. What more cann ya ask for. 98 rock tried to get the next best thing with Cowhead and Spiceboy to pull back Bubba’s audience but they fired them like Bubba for the very reason why they hired them. Regular radio SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Hype Poet Says:

As a person who works nights and is walking out the door at 6am, the morning drive is a very important part of my day….This past week has SUCKED scrotum for Tampa radio with Cowhead off the air and Schnitt/MJ on vacation. To the powers that be: PLEASE, PLEASE bring back Cowhead. DO NOT punish the listeners. This is most likely another FCC attempt at censoring any radio show that even remotely comes across as real and/or entertaining. Why can’t we, the audience, be trusted to filter our own media. How many more times is the TB area going to have the rug yanked out from under them?

  15. school bus driver Says:

I’m just gonna be ten times meaner to the kids riding my school bus in the mornings, until they bring cowhead back, that’s all!

  16. Fake Screen Name Says:

I invite you all to boycott all Clear Channel stations and their events until Cowhead hits the Tampa airwaves again. This includes 98 Rock AND Livestock. Terrestrial radio SUCKS

  17. RF Says:

    Subject: New @ The Bone…..

I have had the opportunity to work in this building for 9 years and through 3 different owners. A lot has changed for the better since I arrived in 1997. One of the most exciting things to watch in this market was the heated battle that went on in the Classic Rock format. When it started, WTBT was a giant. It was one of the top billing and top rated stations in this market. I can’t tell you the satisfaction I had in watching WTBT go away last year. The staffs at WHPT and WXGL proved to be giant killers!!!

With Thunder out of the way, nearly 86% of the music The Bone plays is now exclusive, and we have added close to 50,000 new listeners!!!!! The ONLY missing ingredient is a concerted effort in building a morning show that is local and live. I am proud to say that we now have one. THE COWHEAD SHOW will now call 102.5 THE BONE, WHPT home! It is clear to everyone on the decision making team that Cowhead is the last piece of our puzzle. Cowhead is the personality that fits THE BONE, and he brings with him significant equity to the male listener in Tampa Bay. Cowhead’s ability to attract a loyal male audience, paired with our commitment to quality programming, will continue to re-enforce The Bone as the fastest growing radio station in Tampa Bay!

The Cowhead Show will go live in the coming weeks. We will be creatively teasing his arrival on the air until that time. Please welcome him when you see him.

Thank you to John, Slater, and Stacy for the great job they continue to do on-air at The Bone. A special Thank you to Slater for covering mornings. You will continue to hear Slater live weekday afternoons on The Bone!

Congratulations to John, Jason, Dan, and their teams for this exciting new addition to The Bone.

Please feel free to e-mail or see me if you have any questions.
