Tampa Detective Juan Serrano
Today we remember Detective Juan Serrano. He was killed in an accident caused by an unliscenced illegal immigrant who was drunk and ran a red light. The guy then fled from the scene.
In addition to Tampa Detective, Serrano was Pam Iorio’s driver and close friend.
Today is Serrano’s funeral which includes a long-standing police tradition ending with one last call:
All units, be advised, Juan Serrano, badge 857, detective with the Criminal Intelligence Bureau, having served this community for 17 years with the Tampa Police Department, has ended his watch on Feb. 25, 2006. May God rest his soul….
“Detective Serrano is 10-7.”
Rest in Peace, Detective.

I took my children to see the police funeral for that officer who was killed in 2001 and we’d be there today if we didn’t have school. It’s something to see and a good showing shows police support. This is the one time I hope traffic is tied up for hours.

Anyone who isn’t moved to tears by Serrano’s final radio call needs to get themselves checked. What makes me most sad is that he was killed by the kind of driver that some folks don’t want the cops to go after.

Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting;
The soul that rises with us,our life’s star,
Hath had elsewhere its setting, And cometh from afar;
Not in entire forgetfulness, And not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come From God,
who is our home.
- William Wordsworth
Peace to Detective Serrano and strength to all his loved ones.

And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?
Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.
RIP

I was there at the funeral, I heard that last call.
A long time friend of the family. What an exemplary individual, what a sad loss. Que descanses en Paz (Rest in Peace) Juan.
