This morning brought the first day of tbt*’s daily free publication. The Big Fanfare included free coffee this morning, and a million staffers handing our free copies of the tab. Free hot dogs, kettle corn, and great music (Jimmy Griswold today) were also on tap at Lykes Gashouse Square during lunchtime. I even got a small bag of Famous Amos’ Cookies for hanging around. The freebies will be available every day this week.
Remember, we were the first to tell you that tbt* was going to go daily, but what we did not know is that the St. Pete Times is also re-branding their entire online effort. Tampabay.com is no longer home to the *tbt publication. Tampabay.com will be the “portal” for all things Tampa Bay. Your bookmarks for sptimes.com will now send you right to tampabay.com.
From there, you can reach the Times website, tbt*, ItsYourTimes, even Florida Trend. Within Tampabay.com, they plan to have everything else, including breaking news, bar & restaurant listings, things to do, traffic reports, marketplace (classifieds), blogs, and archives. They want it to be your home page.
I’ve only spent a few minutes there, thus far, but it looks an awful lot like their nearest competitor – and that site is just a mess. I certainly hope the new Times spot is it easier to navigate.
Because it’s important that know where to find that worst commode.
Editor’s note: I know, I know. I’ll never be in the papers again.

anybody else think the new portal kinda blows? I mean unless you like advertising.
I like the google search of their archives is handy I guess.
I found that if you click on the news button at the top of the page you go to the old version of the St Pete Times online we are used to.

This would make a great commuter paper, if there were actually any commuters around here. Funny that the Times wants to compare this tab to others in NYC, Chicago and DC, yet all three of those are major cities with train systems where people still make papers a daily habit.
Trying to throw a free daily paper into the mix makes us look like posers. This market’s barely big enough to sustain the Times and Trib as it is.
Maybe they’ll settle that TBT debacle in court. They’d be better off spending that money on writers instead of lawyers, but that’s just me.

Never be in the papers again? You’re worried about that?
Aim higher, my friend. Your site – and others of its ilk – should make TBT and TBO nervous.
