April 3, 1906 – Gertrude Weston, a widow from Jacksonville, purchases the Almeria Hotel, located at the northeast corner of Franklin and Washington Streets in downtown Tampa. Howell T. Lykes, progenitor of the Lykes Family, built the hotel in 1886. Weston intended to renovate the twenty-year-old hotel and place it on the “American Plan”.
