this is the third in an ongoing series
part one: residences at franklin
part two: arlington and fly restaurant
part three: skypoint
use our handy map of downtown to follow along

The demolition of the old Maas Bros. department store (now largely complete) has caused some controversy, but the project slated for the site (the block bounded by Tampa, Zack, Franklin, and Twiggs) is greenlighted and construction should begin shortly after the site is cleared.

SpeakingDebris of Maas Bros. Demolition of greenlighting, the Wood Partners’ web site for the building should only be viewed with red-tinted shades. The skyscraper will sit diagonally across the site, which should be interesting. Like Skypoint this building will also be 32 stories, but with 450-500 units. The architect for the two projects was the same, though some renderings of this project show a bug zapper or lantern-like ornament at the top; it is my fervent hope this will be lighted green every night, so that we might bring another superhero movie to Tampa.

Anybody else besides me find it weird that the Trib waited until Maas Bros. was completely gone to write a retrospect about it? That story might have had more meaning when the first bricks were knocked out weeks ago, which is when SOF covered it. Again I say, I just don’t get these circulation declines!

I totally agree but isn’t the SOF/Tampa Trib comparison competition thing getting a little lame, particularly coming in the comment section from SOF’s own writers? Not looking to piss anyone off, I enjoy SOF, but the self-congratulatory tone of late is a little off-putting.

Although I agree that I am awesome I do see your point about being offputting. To their credit the trib actually, you know, researched stuff and talked to people. :)

Actually, Sandy’s right. All I’m saying is SOF was way out front on this and the Trib was a convenient foil because of that day’s paper. Bottom line is there’s no need for touting, people can (and do) figure this stuff out for themselves.

Bottom line, its sad to see the Maas Brothers building gone, and it is rather off that the Trib would wait to run an article meritous of front page coverage until after the demolition was complete. All that aside, ashes to ashes dust to dust now its time to see how this condo tower will come out.

Hey, folks, guess what — you don’t write the obituary until the subject is dead!
