April 12, 1956 – Democratic Presidential candidates Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver cross paths in Tampa during campaign visits to the city. Stevenson, who would eventually win the Democratic nomination and face President Eisenhower in the general election, was the grandson of a vice president. Kefauver gained a name for himself when he chaired the Senate Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce, better known as the Kefauver Committee in 1950. The committee investigated organized crime in Tampa, interviewing a host of characters, including an elderly Charlie Wall, in the process.
