The tone of the editorial seems to be-”How dare public servants earn more than private sector employees?” I suppose we’d attract a lot more talent, and governmental efficiency, if in addition to background checks we required a signed vow of poverty.

Paul Wilborn, Tampa’s “arts czar,” makes at least $90K a year courtesy of city taxpayers. WTF does he do that warrants that kind of jack?

I should have said “does the government function better”? my contact with government officials is limited but my thoughts would be that high pay is alright if you are getting top drawer people. As much as we like to joke and make fun of govt employees do we want to see how good the second string is?
And I am not sure I feel comfortable with comparing a legislative aide that makes $65k and can look to the private sector for better pay with a garbage man who makes, if he is paid at the highest payscale offered, $37k per the ATU contract.
Edit-you ask a most excellent question that the Trib should have asked. A little graphic of some service comparisons could have gone a long way to support their arguement, if in fact Tampa and Hillsborough County are not getting their money’s worth.
On another note. I like the idea that our local government employees are also voters whose views must be considered, though apparently the Tribune does not. At least that means they can still afford to live in the jurisdiction where they work. I could be crazy, but I would guess employees who are also community members are more responsive to that community.

Make Tampa a place people might actually want to live in? As opposed to going to, oh, St. Petersburg?

Paul a friend of yours, Tim? Guess that’s why everybody seems to be moving to St. Pete lately! Or at least going down to Central Ave for really good live music. I could do that job for way less money, but as long as they’re offering, give it here!
I hadn’t heard his name before today. And I’m pretty sure the TBPAC has several shows going on at any given moment that trump anything St. Pete has.

I thought TBPAC was in charge of booking its own shows, not the city gov. Ditto the Ice Palace, Tampa Theater, etc. I might be mistaken, but I doubt it. Most people I know in Tampa’s arts circles do their own work without charging taxpayers a dime. So I’ll ask again, what are we paying this so-called city employee, servant of the people, ninety thousand damn dollahs a year! And who else at City Hall rakes in similarly?
