May 6, 1941 – A snorting, seven-foot alligator nicknamed “Hitler” by a crowd of 400 Tampans ties up traffic at 13th and Twiggs Street (the Channelside area) after crawling out of the Estuary channel. The alligator is shot by a police officer after repeated attempts to subdue the animal fail.
