[...] A lot of people see Tampa Bay as a whole comprised of many parts. That’s a nice thought, but it doesn’t necessarily indicate that all the parts have any affection for each other. There’s plenty of dysfunction between the general public, the media and especially our local governments. So as the area quickly grows into an uber-suburb, how do we get each distinct piece thinking together as one? Having been involved in the “political correctness” effort of Tampa Bay over the years it has become clear that this effort may not really be such a great thing. How many of you readers cross the Bay on a regular basis ? Are we merely trying to raise a standard rather than reach for opportunities of excellence in our communities for fear of having signficantly substandard communities ? Tampa has magnificent culturally diverse neighborhoods. We need to appreciate and identify them rather than blend them into mediocrity over the political correctness of “Tampa Bay.”

Judging by the traffic on the Howard Frankland every morning (and on I-75 between Pasco and Hillsborough) I’d say a lot.
Culturally you are dead right - Polk, Sarasota and Pinellas are pretty darn different, and there’s no use in pretending they’re not. But on an infrastructure level, those “Now Entering ____ County” signs are nothing more than something to stare at when you’re stuck in traffic. Coordination is pretty vital.
