vinnie cash-steala
May 10, 2001 – The Tampa Bay Devil Rays release third baseman Vinny Castilla with nearly $5.5 million left on his contract. Acquired in December 1999 from the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Rolando Arrojo and infielder Aaron Ledesma, Castilla earned $13 million for hitting .219 with 8 HR and 51 RBI in 109 games for the Devil Rays.

This has got to be the low spot for the TBHC. I’ve seen great history stories, but any one that invokes Vinny Castilla and the Devil Rays just seems to be an incomparably small historic significance.

They need to do a retrospective on Devil Rays first round draft picks who bombed…Actually that might take too much time/space.
“Now in the on deck circle…Delmon Young!”

Fear not, John. We know there are some sports fans out there, Tommy included, who would like the Castilla story. Some great dates are coming up, so hopefully we will redeem ourselves in your eyes. Thanks for reading though.

Hey, I’m a sports fan — and the entire Castilla and Hit Show years of the Devil Rays I would love to just FORGET

John, just remember: If we do not remember history we are doomed to repeat it! Sure Cash-Steala is tough to take even five years later, but remember we must. Otherwise we could end up with deja vu all over again. Hey remember when the Rays got John Rocker? And how about the time Art Williams said “We gawn weein the Stanley Cup!” What a hoot.
