west shore blvd closed
May 23, 1941 – West Shore Boulevard between Columbus Drive and Tampa Bay Boulevard is closed indefinitely to traffic to prevent interference with Army Air Corps activities at Drew Field. This segment of Westshore Boulevard fell within the boundaries of Drew Field, and Hillsborough County Commissioner Fred W. Ball said that one of the runways to be constructed would run across the road. Drew Field, originally a city airport, was developed as an auxiliary field to MacDill Air Base at a cost of over $1,000,000 ($13,000,000 in today’s dollars).
