one hundred things tampa bay

According to the Weekly Planet, before you can claim to be a true resident of Tampa Bay, there are 100 things you must do.  In true Planet fashion, the list includes items from the sublime to the ridiculous. Some are questionable, but for the most part, the list gives a good indication of your Tampa-Bay-ness.

Wifey and I went through the list this past weekend.  It turns out I have done about 77 since 1980, and wifey has been through about 70 of them since ’87. We’re gonna get started on the last 30 immediately.

Other great locals have checked the list, too.  Addison has lived here for 18 months, and has completed 29 of the list. Can-o-worms Ben has accomplished 28 of the items within the last couple years.  DC Dave just got to Tampa this week, and so far has accomplished… zero.

So, how many have you done, and how long has it taken you?  Let us know here in the comments or on your own website.

As a Tampa native, I am sad to report that I only scored a 62. How embarrasing. I think it’s my lack of St. Pete exposure that really did me in.

  2. Sandy Says:

81-99: THE URBAN EXPLORER. I now feel my attitude is completely justified. And if so much time hadn’t gone by that the old places are disappearing they could have included a banana daquiri at the OLD Hurricane at Pass-a-Grille (bananas, rum, ice, blender), lunch (and those teeny muffins) at the Colonnade, sangria and nachos at the Mexican Burro and tee dances at the OP.

Wow, I’ve done about 90 of those things! In less than five years. Maybe it’s time to move . . . or invent a fabulous 101st thing no one has ever done before . . . like take mushrooms and listen to my voice under the Gandy Bridge while whipping my Jimmy Buffet shirt around my head and throwing margaritas at children trying to fish.

Wait, no, that was Memorial Day. Guess it’s time to move, after all.

  4. Jason Says:

hmm I never fished at the Gandy, I did fish when i wasa kid at the old amrina next to the Gandy before they built the Culbreath Key Condos does that count?

Since arriving in town 7 months ago I’ve done 30 things from the list, 31 if you count attending a Variance Review Board hearing as having fun in downtown Tampa after dark.

I thought I was the only one who heckled hookers on Nebraska! Now I don’t feel quite so alone.

51 - kinda sad since I’ve been here quite a while and will be leaving in a few short weeks. I thought I was the only one who did #51. Which one is a must before leaving? I’m going to save the list and hit St. Pete at least a few times before saying goodbye for good.

  8. tim Says:

I’ve done 34 in 20 months here. I’m sure I’ve done more than the people I’m living with who have been here five years, though.

  9. dcdave Says:

i promise i’ll get started right away.

  10. Addison Says:

Okay, people, we need commentary on it. What have you done? We need a list, and your commentary/explanation on it.

  11. tim Says:

I’ll write up a detailed review of what I’ve done on my blog tomorrow.

  12. Gax Says:

I working on the list right now and should have my results tommorrow.

  13. kate Says:

    Yes, sir, Addison, sir. ;-)

41-60: THE HOMETOWNER. Close but no Ybor City cigar. Maybe you need to cross the bridge sometime.

I’ve done 58 in 19 years (my whole life, minus 5 years away). I include the WP’s scoring because it’s dead-on… Tampa is my hometown, and I do have a bit (ok, a lot) of trouble crossing the bridge. Of the 42 I haven’t done, my top 5 to-dos are:
    - Dunedin Brewery
    - Jobsite Theater
    - Tropical Heatwave
    - Boyd Hill Nature Preserve (umm, I’d never even heard of this before…)
    - Covivant (also had never heard of)

p.s. My “thrill hill” growing up was the one on Davis Islands… I think that should count :-)

  15. Sandy Says:

Um, that’s absolutely correct, wfucourt. I had to ask my brother but the real Thrill Hill was on Davis Islands. All those beers back then, who could remember? Thanks for pointing that out.

  16. Gax Says:

Mine comes to between 40 and 48 depending on if you count “maybes”. Which is both good and bad. Good considering that I rarely venture outside my zip code. And bad considering that I’ve lived and worked all over the Bay area since arriving in 1979.
