cesspools of iniquity
June 7, 1896 – “Gamblers and Their Gall Must Give Way to Legitimate Pursuits of Business Life” announced the Tampa Morning Tribune in a story about newly elected Tampa Mayor Myron Gillett. The paper stated that Gillett was determined to “clean out the cesspools of Iniquity in the City of Tampa,” and that “gambling halls must go, and the brazen faced harlot must retire to the back streets where her examples will not corrupt the youth of the city.” The paper pointed out that the new mayor made it clear to the “entire police force of 26 men” that they were to take their jobs seriously and enforce the law.
