We recently referenced the Tampa Tribune poll asking which local and regional issues were most important. A government funded organization also found the Tribune article interesting enough to post on their blog.

Wait! Did I say “government and blog?” What is that about?

Welcome to the “How Shall We Grow?” blog. The purpose of this site is to promote and foster discussion about creating a shared vision about growth for the Central Florida region.

We have launched this blog in conjunction with community outreach meetings that myregion.org is conducting in the following Central Florida counties: Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Volusia.

During our community sessions we will ask partipants (sic) to visit the blog to continue the discussion. This blog also allows those not able to attend the ability to share their comments and opinions on the issues we face.

The project is being funded through a partnership between the following organizations:

Central Florida MPO Alliance, East Central FL Reg Planning Council, FL Dept of Community Affairs, FL Dept of Transportation, myregion.org, and the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce

Wow. Government is giving regular citizens a way to voice… Nix that. They are giving regular citizens AN EASY, MODERN, CHEAP, & EFFECTIVE way to chime in on local growth issues. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that government will listen to them. We’ll keep an eye on it, though.

And why hasn’t the Tampa Bay Partnership got something like this?

I don’t know if I would be too impressed with people saying they were against too much growth. It is like asking if you like root canals or ice cream, most folks will answer the way you expect. They also don’t let you see the poll, even on Mason-Dixons website. Did they actually ask “What is the biggest issue affecting Florida today?” or “[do you feel] that state and local government should do more to restrict growth in Florida?” that is why I harp on these poll articles. They don’t tell you what the questions poll respondents were given all they provide are interpretations of the data. I understand that a print paper cannot publish the poll itself but the online article sure can link to a subpage with this data.
