Aaron Banks.

Remember that name. In two years or so when you’re driving along Fowler Avenue, you will look across the road from MOSI and ask, “Who the heck designed that eyesore?”  The above name will be your answer.

Aaron Banks is a USF architecture student who won a contest to design the building that will house the vaguely-named Center for Global Solutions.

The building will look like…  Uh…  It sort of resembles the…  um…  This is what the building will look like.

One of the draws of the design was that its supposed environmental appeal - solar panels, reclaimed water, and so on. I hope those solar panels will be able to create enough electricity to power the air conditioning necessary to cool a building with that many windows in Florida.

Did anyone bother to check Aaron’s grades before they picked his design?

what is it pointing at? don’t design usually undergo signifigant changes prior to construction after the engineers review things anyway? Are we seeing the “concept” or has this already recieved engineering approval?

  2. C.W. Says:

Wait till the contractors get a look at this. Then we’ll see if the finished product turns out the same as this, um, original design.

  3. Rachel* Says:

Give him a break - he’s a student! There was no way they were going to get a professional design if the contest wasn’t open to professionals!

  4. Sandy Says:

Well, yeah, but THIS student? THIS is the best they got? Aye Carumba.

  5. Joel Says:

This is very preliminary, so I’m sure the hardhats will have some changes to make.

So maybe the powers that be deserve equal blame/credit for picking the design, but I’m quite certain that functionality and harmony with surroundings are pretty basic ideas in architecture; did he miss those days?

Then again the Patels, who gave the money for the center, are building the largest residence in Hillsborough, so maybe ostentatious is what they were after.

  6. Addison Says:

Well, my friend, whom shall remain nameless is dating the architect for the house they’re building. I’ve heard a few things about the design of the house, but haven’t seen the plans yet.

  7. Sarah Says:

    bizarre!!

  8. Meredith Says:

“The physician can bury his mistakes, but the architect can only advise his client to plant vines - so they should go as far as possible from home to build their first buildings.”

ummm, they do have advances now in glass design that permit visible light to come through without heat from uv rays.

besides, this was a conceptual design created within a short period of time for a student competition. so no, it’s not suppose to be the the final design. even while producing construction documents, changes are still made.

so i’m suspecting most of you aren’t actually in the architecture field.
