June 14, 1911 – The Tampa Sanitary Department reports an unusually high amount of refuse at its incinerator – forth-eight tons per day – for the past few weeks. Officials blamed the high consumption of watermelons throughout the city for the increase. Prisoners at the city stockade were pressed into service to help gather the extra garbage collected during the summertime melon feasts.
