unwanted streetcar line
June 16, 1911 – The Tampa Morning Tribune reports that S. J. Sligh, owner of a large orange grove in the Sulphur Springs area just north of Tampa, advised the manager of the property to “use a shotgun” if necessary to keep surveyors from the Tampa-Sulphur Springs Traction Company out of the grove. The Traction Company planned on running their streetcar tracks through a portion of the grove property as part of their overall route, connecting Tampa to the northern suburb.

With a attitude like that, no wonder the city of Tampa named a street after him.

It’s rather odd how some cities are trying to make a come back with streetcars again..
I can remember riding from end of line in Sulphur Springs all the way out to Port Tampa City.. Tracks went right between the streets on Bayshore Blvd. south of Howard Ave. Believe me this was an all day event..
After all we didn’t have alot of things to do like you do now - but you don’t know just how happy and relaxed we were..
Sitting in class at HHS looking out the window and watching them remove the old tracks on Central Ave. How much fun we had on the old cars.. I’m 45 miles south of Tucson,AZ and they have brought back an old streetcar that runs on the week-ends it’s always crowded…
