gardener on the roof
Linda Saul Sena, who told us she wants Kiley Gardens restored to its past glory, now wants green space at the Tampa Convention Center.
Did I say at? I meant on. Saul Sena wants green space on the roof of the Tampa Convention Center.
I can’t wait for that first 2×4-supported palmetto tree to be planted.
We kid! Actually green roofs can be both visually and environmentally appealing. They’re a growing trend in other cities; learn more about them at Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.

Knowing the convention center needs to be expanded though, I’m curious if this is a wise move…?

Considering that the 2008 GOP Convention Bid includes a new roof for the convention center, wouldn’t the City have to re-do this anyway?

There’s a green roof on top of a garage in Pontiac, michigan, where they used to have a concert festival every year. A huge one, with national acts. It was a really, really cool place.

Linda is pretty nice. She was the only member of the council that called me back when I complained about the Kiley Gardens wasteland. She also wrote down sticksoffire.com to check out when I told her I was going to post her comments here.

how about if tampa plants a few more trees and shrubs and grass where we can actually see them, like along dale mabry, kenndy blvd, downtown, channelside etc. this town is a bare brown wasteland cmpared to other fla cities

But trees along dale mabry would block my view of the wall in the mons venus parking lot with the aibrushed nude women on it AND WE CAN’T HAVE THAT!!!! Incidentally the DOT is going to add medians and trees to Hillsborough ave between 50th st and I275. Some area residents actually complained that it would hinder traffic.

Wait till you see what DOT has planned for Gandy - they never have stopped scheeming to make it an elevated road. Maybe they are envious of the US19 disaster in Pinellas and want a disaster for their very own. We residents voted it down, but lo and behold the planned “landscapping” is laid out to accomodate pylons.

City council reviewed plans for Kennedy in May, that include landscaping to separate pedestrians from traffic (trees as guard rails).

ya gotta wonder, at this late date, why there is so little public landscaping in this town? i mean, its florida, for frigging sake. this place shd be a green jungle everywhere, not all concrete along all the major roads. even bayshore is a barren wasteland. why arent the ballastades lit up at night? where are the palm trees? there are a few spindly ones, but come on!

Palm trees don’t favor auto exhuast. Everytime they try to plant new palms along Courtney Campbell, for example, a bunch are dead within 3 months.

I think it’s a great idea. One thing I don’t like about Tampa is the lack of landscaping in public areas.
Ever since Andrew hit Miami, I have noticed an explosion of greenery in public places all around Dade County. Palms were errected along the freeway entrances and exits, and along major highways as well. They just went nuts planting all over town. I can’t stand Miami, but I will give them credit for their landscaping detail.
Before Andrew, it was about as barren as Tampa is now, landscaping was limited to residential homes and those businesses that choose to spend the money on it.
The amount of public “greenspace” in any city is a good indication of pride in one’s hometown.
Even little Largo has made great strides in landscaping along the West Bay corridor, although they still have a long ways to go.
So if Linda wants to greenify the Convention Center, let her run with it! Hopefully other businesses will take initiative do the same thing.
As for Jason, you could always see if Joe Redner wants to get on board with this and landscape around the Mons Venus Wall and the rest of his strip joints.
That way, ol Rhonda will start competing with him by planting various “gardens of faith” and soon, they’ll be competing all over town with all kinds of landscaping. That type of competition benefits us all.

I just recently found out that MOSI has a green roof. I like the idea!

re redner landscaping…i know its a joke, but, really, he should. and look at berns steakhouse, for gods sake. it looks like a concrete funeral parlor, not a stick of grass in sight, never mind trees. and its the only joint tampa is known for. its a disgrace, w all the money they have raked in over decades that their places looks so dreadful. dont get me started on this!!

I think a green roof is a WONDERFUL idea- it reduces energy costs, keeping the interior of the building cooler in the summer (it’s 94 degrees out there now- who needs that?!). It also contributes to the atmospheres natural water recycling system: in green space water evaporates after a rain. In the concrete jungle (such as Dale Mabry), water is turned into runoff, dragging with it all the chemicals and particulate matter into our rivers and ground water, causing higher energy use for the water management facilities who have to treat our water. A green roof would help nature do it’s job by reducing runoff. Also, in times of high rain where flooding is an issue (late summer around here), a green roof would reduce runoff thereby reducing flooding. In Chicago they want to “greeinify” many roofs… Boy, I wish we’d do more of that in Tampa!
