Congratulations to Mount Dora High School and USF alumnus Solomon Jones - he was drafted in the second round of the NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks.

Solomon Jones was the 33rd overall pick, making him the highest-drafted player in USF history, and first one since Curtis Kitchen in 1986. He’ll join undrafted Chucky Atkins as the only current USF grads in the NBA.

ponzi schemed in tampa

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

June 28, 1926 – “Financial Wizard” Charles Ponzi is arrested in New Orleans. Ponzi, whose name is now synonymous with fraudulent investment deals, arrived in New Orleans aboard a steamer from Tampa, where he claimed to have worked as a waiter since February. Ponzi had actually fled to Florida, having jumped bail just prior to entering prison in Boston, to take part in the Florida Land Boom.

south tampa horse racing

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

June 27, 1931 – A state charter to open a track to hold horse races is granted to a group of local investors. The Gulf Coast Racing Association planned to build the track on the north side of Gandy Boulevard between Manhattan Avenue and Vera Avenue (now Dale Mabry Highway). The track was never constructed and a shopping center currently occupies the proposed track site.

metal karaoke

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

This weekend I decided that I’d had enough of simply entertaining myself through food, so Friday night the wife and I headed out to the Brass Mug.

The Brass Mug is a consummate dive bar on Fowler Av.  You might know them as the place that advertises “Metal Karaoke” on Tuesdays.  That’s right, metal karaoke.  Apparently you can even bring your own CD’s and just sing along.  Rad.

But on Friday, we got to see a trio of local bands:  The Pale Horse, Ghost Town Gridlock and Farewell to Finley. I’ve never actually heard of any of them before, but I’m not from here and they’re local bands. Needless to say, we had a good time, met some great people and rocked out.

Although a fun time was had by all, we were incredibly offended by the moron with the “I Shot Martin Luther King” t-shirt.  I will save futher opining on that particular subject, as it wouldn’t be fit to post. You can fill in the blanks for me.

gardener on the roof

Monday, June 26th, 2006

Linda Saul Sena, who told us she wants Kiley Gardens restored to its past glory, now wants green space at the Tampa Convention Center.

Did I say at? I meant on. Saul Sena wants green space on the roof of the Tampa Convention Center.

I can’t wait for that first 2×4-supported palmetto tree to be planted.

We kid!  Actually green roofs can be both visually and environmentally appealing. They’re a growing trend in other cities; learn more about them at Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.

give ‘em the finger

Monday, June 26th, 2006

Found via the Tampa Bay Business Journal:

Coast to Coast convenience stores has installed a biometric payment system at its store on the corner of Florida and Bearss avenues in Tampa. The system, developed by the Pay By Touch company, allows customers to make purchases with a scan of their fingerprint.

You can sign up at the store, or online at BioPay.  They claim to be the first in Florida to use this system.

“Coast to Coast’s unique convenience center concept, located at the corner of Florida and Bearss Avenue, is a great fit for incorporating biometric payments, and we are excited to be the first Tampa retailer to give our customers the convenience and security of paying with the touch of a finger,” said Amer Hawatmeh, president of Coast to Coast. “The system debits a shopper’s checking account just like writing a check or using a debit card, but without having to hassle with wallets, cards, PINs, paper or checks. Because account numbers are not exposed, the technology is helping us provide our customers with faster checkouts and more secure transactions.”

As an introductory offer, customers who enroll to use the BioPay-branded service at Coast to Coast will receive a free car wash with their gas purchase. After the first time, consumers will receive free chips and a fountain drink with a deli meal purchase.

It seems to me that this technology would come in handy at Adventure Island where you have few pockets.  Or better yet, how about Paradise Lakes, Caliente and Lake Como, where there are no pockets!
