rickenbacker visits macdill
July 1, 1971 – Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker visits MacDill Air Force Base to help with redesignation ceremonies for three squadrons of the First Tactical Fighter Wing, one of them the old 94th Aero Squadron. This was Rickenbacker’s famed “Hat-in-the-Ring” outfit of World War I. Rickenbacker held court on several issues of the day, calling Daniel Ellsberg (of Pentagon Papers fame) a “damned good thief” and said that the Vietnam War would have been “locked up 10 years ago” if the United States had initially bombed strategic harbors in North Vietnam.
