In a recent print edition of the Tampa Bay Business Journal, Michael Hinman tells us about a company that expects to make $15,000-$20,000 per month with a Tampa news blog.

Hinman contacted me to get my opinion on the prospects of such an endeavor. I had to call him back, because I was working at the real job. Which should give you a hint at what I pointed out in the article.

The reporter also spoke to Josh Hallett of hyku, and Brett Glisson of TampaBLAB fame, both of whom viewed the company’s plans with skepticism. Josh wrote a bit more on his blog: Another Bad Idea

Eric Deggans wasn’t so wordy. He just says it’s boring. And I can’t disagree with that. But see for yourself.

It’s obvious these guys don’t have a clue. Need more? Read the press release from the corporate blog spot - The Blog Spot Network. Seems that name might piss off the mighty Google and Friends, but, whatever. Here’s the opening of the announcement of the Tampa News Blog:

Tampa News Blog Launches Today Offering Interactivective and On Demand News

Tampa, Fl. June 14, 2006, Tampa News Blog™ http://www.tampanewsblog.com/ announces today the launch of the first known news blog that provides only local news and does so in an inner active blog format.

So is it “Interactivective” or “inner active?”

“First Known News Blog”??

Bah. There’s much more, but a dead horse and all…

The site is brand new and will probably undergo changes before it realizes its full potential. I think they’re overstating their profit potential just a bit and would have probably done better to partner with an existing site that does the job well - like Sticks. However, I find it funny that you all are picking on the new kids. A reporter for the St. Pete Times knocks a possible competitor? How shocking! And Sticks is doing the same. You guys sound like bullies. Give them a chance, cutie pies. There’s room for everyone.

I won’t read it if it’s going to feature such horrible grammar.

The irony here, of course, is the way your headline panders so competitively to SEO.

  4. tommy Says:

Kate: That’s sorta my point. It ain’t gonna fly the way it is now.

Rachel*: Ironic? Maybe. Covering the bases? sure….

i looked at this new site the day they launched. it is painfully boring. the reader comment feature on each story is, i guess, what they think is unique. however, all content is poached from traditional media where readers are more likely to make a comment. if they can rake in 15k a mo doing this, then im starting one right now!
meanwhile, there is room for much much better blogging in tampa. sof and sem hgts seem to be most generally popular, but, egad, both are so lame. the opening is there to drive the proverbial mack truck through.

dreaming: I agree with you - there is a lot of room for more and better local blogging. I doubt you can make $15K/month, but perhaps you can be the one to drive a truck through that hole.

dreaming - For the sake of possible constructive criticism, what do you think that proverbial mack truck would look like, blog-wise? Unless you’re saving your ideas for your own blog venture, we’d love to hear some suggestions.

More news? Less news? Less me (I can handle the truth, though there ain’t much of me to begin with)? Toaster giveaways?

SOF tries to amuse/inform/confuse the reader, and it is all about the reader. We’re pretty sure we couldn’t be much lamer - how can we best become less lame?

Bleech. I’m not impressed. If they make $15K a month, I hope they use some of it to hire a proofreader.

I did notice that they have 20 blogs to your one! Give them a break!

    More is better? Um…. no.
