July 4, 1951 – America’s responsibility as the leader of freedom-loving nations is highlighted in a radio broadcast by Cody Fowler, a Tampa attorney and president of the American Bar Association. Speaking on an Independence Day broadcast carried by NBC, Fowler said Americans have a responsibility to use freedom of speech properly. The privilege, he said, should not be abused by unjustified or careless criticism of public officials. “The responsibility is much greater in times like these,” Fowler said, “when anything that is said might be seized upon by either friend or enemy as an indication of weakness.” Fowler clarified that he did not believe all public officials were beyond reproach, but was only “suggesting you and I think before we speak.”
