tampa launches shasta
July 9, 1941 – The U.S.S. Shasta, the navy’s newest ship, is launched from the Tampa Shipbuilding Company under armed guard and strict naval censorship. On hand to attend the first naval launching in Tampa was Mrs. Spessard L. Holland, the first lady of Florida. She was so moved by the experience of christening the ship that she had tears streaming down her cheeks. “I never was so thrilled before,” said Mrs. Holland. “I’m crying now, but I don’t know why.” The Shasta would go on to receive five battle stars during World War II.
