…only outlaws will have rock ‘n’ roll
The 8.5×11 piece of paper looks like a copy of a copy of a copy. It’s not quite as bad as the smudgy fax Phil Esposito got when Chris Gratton left the Lightning, but it just doesn’t look official.
The wording, however, sounds completely official:
You have been warned that the noise levels at your property are in violation of City Ordinance and could result in criminal enforcement. This warning is valid for a period of 12 months…
Yup. The JGLB got cited for rockin’ too loud in Ybor City. To be more precise, we received a written NOISE METER WARNING. I was informed that should we receive another of these within the next 365 days, there will be an arrest.
Previous ponderings and other links on the “TURN IT DOWN” contingent:
- July 2005 – City wants noise level lowered to the same as a hair dryer.
- December 2005 – Asst. Police Chief Jane Castor says the noise must be lower, or else residents will call police to complain.
- January 2006 – Mayor Pam Iorio suggests violators get jail time. (and the Trib story).
- February 2006 - City Council passes the ordinance making loud noise a criminal offense.
- City Ordinance (pdf)
- Prosecutor David Shobe’s contention that the surrounding area must be quiet to get an accurate reading.
- And, the City of Tampa TampaGov website is still touting the “Ybor City Entertainment District”
(it’s not quite Footloose, is it?)

for the love of god, dont those idiots have anything better to do than crack down on the only place in tampa with an ounce of life?
i bet the new orleans noise police are all over those nasty party bands on bourbon street, attracting all those awful tourists who spend all that awful money. not. what a bush league town, tampa is. lets turn everything into harbour island. ybor is already 500 percent deader than it was just a few years ago. the premeditated murder of the place by city hall continues apace.

This is completely idiotic. How do we challenge this law in court?

I am not sure it is possible for homes and bars/venues to coexist as closely as they do in Ybor. I seem to remember Jannus landing constantly fighting with its neighborhood residents in St Pete years ago. It would be interesting to see the records of noise complaints from Ybor residents, although I recall a Tampa police spokesperson saying they had not recieved many…yet.

That is utterly disgusting.

it seems like the cops dont need complaints on this, they can just go around citing people. Tommy, i dont think your band is loud enough to draw complaints, so you’re just getting harrassed by aggressive cops, who are going around looking for trouble.

Fans of live local music need to unite to let the city and TPD know how stupid this whole noise rule is. Our friends in St. Pete are laughing at us over this. No way is Central Ave. more fun than 7th Ave., but lately it looks that way.

This is just horsesh*t. You’re not the first I’ve heard recently who has gotten a citation.
Did anyone catch The Daily Show last night and the whole piece on SF’s Castro district? This is what this is reminding me of.

“If it’s too loud, you’re too old!”
Reminds me of Rhonda Storms’ efforts to shut down the Ford Amphitheatre.
