france or a hurricane
July 14, 1931 – The French tri-color flag is hoisted atop the First National Bank Building in downtown Tampa in honor of Bastille Day, the French equivalent of Independence Day. E.W. Monrose proudly raised the flag at the building that housed the offices of the French consul. Some confused Tampans speculated that the unfamiliar flag was either a signal for an approaching hurricane or the new state flag of Florida.
