July 15, 1951 – The Tampa Marine Company is awarded a contract for construction of four minesweepers for the Navy. W.H. Reynolds, president of Tampa Marine Company, said their end of the contract would amount to $3,250,000 ($25 million in today’s dollars), and the overall cost of the four ships when complete will be in excess of $6,500,000 ($50 million in today’s dollars). It was said to be the largest naval contract awarded in the Tampa area since the peak of production in World War II, and the largest single marine contract awarded to a Tampa firm in recent years.
