what to do with the armory

Jason gave you a quick look at some of the proposals for the former home of Championship Wrestling from Florida.   TampaGold and SoHo Bill have taken that a step further, and provided a simple round-up of proposals for the armory in West Tampa.  Most proposals have a separate page detailing further information, and Bill wants you to vote for your favorite.  He plans to show the results to officials.

Even if it doesn’t effect the outcome, I’d still be interested to see your thoughts, so go over there and give your opinion.

I think creating more restaurant/bar/shopping /luxury residential space is silly considering that many of the existing spaces are struggling. Look at the empty spaces available in ybor, channelside, and old hyde park. We don’t need more of that. There is an overabundance of luxury housing in the area.

Why can’t this be a Hillsborough County/City of Tampa owned space?
If they want to do something that will benefit the community then I would hope to see affordable housing in the form of condos that are income-restricted with a small transportation hub to take residents to downtown tampa, the westshore district, ybor, USF, old hyde park… In the lower levels of the condo buildings, could be a community center, gym, computer lab, daycare…

    Give people what they need!
We don’t need more shops, restaurant, and luxury housing space.

With due respect, although many important CWF events took place at the Homer Hesterly, including the biggest matches, the REAL home of Florida Championship Wrestling was the Sportatorium at 106 N. Albany. The head office was there, and the TV shows you watched were videotaped there. Long after the Armory quit hosting matches in the early 80’s, the Sportatorium kept on keepin on. Matches were held at the Sportatorium well into the 90’s. Here’s a 1993 pic of an outstanding CWF “game competitor” at the Sportatorium

im not in love w any of these ‘proposals,’ tho a ’skating rink’ in the middle of the w tampa ghetto has got to be the dumbest idea floated in quite some time.

my guess is itll be more condos and a bunch of half empty ’storefronts.’ id have put the art museum there, surrounded by restaurants, bars, retail and a condo component, w a ‘whole foods’ store thrown in for good measure…

Great job by the SoHo folks on the Armory bids, better than the MSM. Don’t mean to pimp my publication, but our entire cover story is devoted to rating the six proposals. The new Weekly Planet hits the newsstands on Wednesday evening, for those who are following this issue.
