have gun, whiskey, life of pi in new world

Last weekend I hopped over to a show at New World Brewery, a great place I’m beginning to frequent more and more.  New Tampa music rag Reax was there in force, handing out free tees, with a Reax mag rack at the entrance to the bar.

Unfortunately I missed the opening band, The Satsukos.  I hate music reviews that don’t include ALL the bands on the slate, but hey, I’m not really a music reviewer, so sue me.

The first act I caught was Have Gun Will Travel, a poetic gentleman with a jangly guitar and a mean harmonica.  He played some Americana/Folk/Bluegrass ditties that were just plain awesome.  Go check his myspace page and buy his EP.   In my humble opinion, he blew everyone else off the stage, but I’m sure that’s just a taste thing. And because he had a harmonica.

The next band was November Whiskey Foxtrot.  They had a kind of rockabilly garage vibe, but they really rocked for a three piece.  A little much on the solo front, but some good songs overall.

The closers were Tampa based Life of Pi.  I’m not sure if they’re named after the book, but they were real barnburners.  Heavy melodic indie rock with interesting guitar work and vocal harmonies.  I can’t say that I know what they were singing about, but they were definitely up my alley.

Bottom line:  5 bucks is a cheap price to pay for great local bands.  Plus, New World Brewery stocks fantastic beer.  What more could you want? I want nothing more.
