July 22, 1911 – A stalled Coast Line passenger train at Polk Street in downtown Tampa causes a 12-minute disruption to streetcar and automobile traffic. City ordinance at the time only permitted a blocked street for a period of three minutes. Some estimates given by frustrated Saturday-evening commuters had the delay lasting as long as 20 minutes. Several irate citizens tracked down Councilman Offin Falk and complained that the delay was “an outrageous disgrace to Tampa.” Police arrested the conductor of the train after Falk told authorities that he could furnish plenty of witnesses to appear in the case.
